In-Wall Photos

360 Test

In rooms where there’s lots of electrical and plumbing in the walls it’s not a bad idea to take what are known as “In-Wall Rough-in” photos. These are photos used to document everything in the wall. They should be taken during a short time window between the final rough-in inspections and the start of drywall.

If you’ve ever had to take Rough-in photos with a regular point and shoot camera you know how difficult this task can be. Your typical job site camera can’t photograph the entire room and you usually end up with multiple shots in each room. It’s very time consuming and often yield less than desired results. Try taking 360-Virtual tours of your rooms.

While I was getting into construction photography I was also crossing over into Real Estate photography. This forced me to get involved with 360-Virtual tours. We’ve all seen these viewers on real estate sites that spin you around in a room. It occurred to me that the same concept and equipment could be used in construction to document In-wall Rough-in. I started taking my virtual tour equipment on the job site and was surprised at how much information I was able to photograph in one shot. I was capturing 100% of the wall rough-in and about 70% of the overhead ceiling rough-in in the same shot. I also began putting a “Story Pole” or measuring stick on the North wall of each room which gives the viewer scale and direction making it very easy to determine where something was in the shot.

I’ll admit that this is not the easiest photograph to take but I’ve found it’s the best way to document the In-Wall Rough-in from floor to ceiling. If you have a small project that requires this type of documentation I would suggest contacting a local real estate photographer in your area to take the photos. Most of these photographers know how to take virtual tours and would probably be interested in helping you. If you’re on a larger project like a hospital you may look at training an employee to take these photos. In future posts I’ll go into more detail on how take these photos. Also note that JobSiteVisitor.com will be looking at adding viewers to display these type of photos.  If you’re in the Denver Metro area and want some 360-virtual In-Wall Rough-in photos taken I can help, contact me at brian@jobsitevisitor.com .
